History and privatization of Aranypók Zrt.

ARANYPÓK Trading Co. is one of the biggest chains of stores for garments in Budapest.

Its legal predecessor was founded on 18 May, 1951 under the name of ATEX National Company. In 1962 it was transformed into Metropolitan Retail Company For Fashionwear and on 01 July, 1973 it assumed today's name ARANYPÓK (Golden Spider) after an old and popular at that time chain of stores called PÓK (Spider).

On 31 December, 1991 ARANYPÓK Trading Company changed its inner structure and became a share-holding company with a registered capital of HUF 389.000.000,-. The employees founded the first in Hungary MRP (ESOP in the USA) organization, and owned 48% of the total shares.

In summer 1994, 10% of the shares, possessed by ÁVÜ (today's ÁPV - Hungarian Privatization and State Holding Co.) were transferred to small investors in exchange for their Compensation Notes. At the same time the company became open to the public and increased its capital to HUF 430.000.000,-.
